44913-01 - Proseminar: Homer as History 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2016
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers William Graham Claytor (graham.claytor@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content "Homer is a god, not a man," claimed one anonymous schoolboy in Roman Egypt. To many, he was simply "the Poet." Would such a figure lie? What kinds of truth can one find in the venerable founts of Western humanism, the Iliad and Odyssey? How did one read Homer in classical Athens, Roman Egypt, Renaissance France, Victorian England, or 1950s America? In this course, we will examine how the work of the Greek poet Homer has been used a source of historical information and inspiration from antiquity until today. While the broader reception history of the Iliad and Odyssey will be considered, we will focus on historical readings of the poems across different cultures and time periods, including Classical Greece, the Roman Empire, Medieval Christendom, Renaissance Europe, up until modern debates about the historicity of Homer. Students will read large selections of the Iliad and Odyssey (in the German translation of Johann Heinrich Voss) in addition to modern scholarship on the different receptions of Homer.
Learning objectives Learn how Homer has been read as a historical source from antiquity until today.
