34546-01 - Block course: Texture Analysis and Orientation Imaging 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2016
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Renée Heilbronner (renee.heilbronner@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The workshop starts with a 2-day introduction to texture basics and CIP, an image-analysis based method for the derivation and mapping of c- axis orientations, misorientations and orientation gradients of uniaxial minerals.
The next 2 days are dedicated to EBSD analysis including MATLAB/mtex: introduction to electron back scatter diffraction and mesotextures, texture analysis in the context of deformation mechanisms, misorientation analysis and applications. Emphasis is on combining / comparing / contrasting CIP, EBSD and MATLAB/mtex analyses.
On the last day, extrapolations to natural and experimental deformation are discussed. Case studies will be presented highlighting texture development in geomaterials. In a final wrap-up session, course material may be reviewed and additional special topics may be discussed.
Learning objectives The aim of the workshops is to familiarize participants with methods for texture analysis and texture mapping (CIP and EBSD), and to discuss applications to geological and rock mechanics problems.
Bibliography Image Analysis in Earth Sciences by R. Heilbronner & S.D. Barret, Springer Verlag 2014. Additional material to be downloaded during course.
