44774-01 - Seminar: Families, households, and gender in Africa 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2016
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Jeremy Robert Ball (JEREMY.BALL@UNIBAS.CH)
Julia Tischler (julia.tischler@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar deals with concepts of family and gender roles in African societies in the 19th and 20th centuries. We look at family and gender not as biological concepts, but as socially constructed identities and belongings. A key theme will be gendered divisions of labor both within and outside the household, for instance in agriculture, trade, mining, or domestic work. What kind of labor was performed by women, men, or children, respectively? What prestige and social roles were connected to these activities? How was women’s work involved in market relations and what did this mean for women’s position in society? By examining examples of individual families and case studies in western, eastern, and southern Africa, we trace how family concepts and gender roles changed under the impression of missionary engagement, increasing international trade and cash crop production, colonial occupation, industrialization, and post-colonial state-building. The course will be held in English.
