41816-01 - Seminar: Sociolinguistics: Language in Social Use - From Local to Global 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2016
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar we will continue our explorations of language in social use and discourse as social practice. Starting from a local (micro-level) focus, we will in the first part of the semester examine the construction of social worlds through language use, focusing in particular on issues of language socialisation and the processes of indexing and identity construction. In the second part of the semester, we will widen the lens to adopt a more comprehensive global (macro-level) perspective. We will then address issues around the uses of English - as a first language, second language, or as a lingua franca - in various parts of the world. Looking at language socialisation within such multilingual contexts, and examining the linguistic 'acts of identities' that speakers within these contexts engage in, will help us see how the micro-levels and the macro-levels of discursive practice are interconnected. Throughout the semester, case studies will be used to introduce and explore the issues raised, and there will be a strong emphasis on applying the concepts discussed to actual language samples.
Learning objectives (a) To understand, and be able to explain, how the processes of language socialisation and linguistic indexing are embedded not only in the interactional 'context of situation', but also in the wider ^'sociocultural contexts' in which the language users find themselves. And (b), to be able to apply this knowledge to the analysis and interpretation of actual language samples.
