46257-01 - Seminar: A World of Camps: Spaces of Refuge 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2016
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Kenny R. Cupers (kenny.cupers@unibas.ch)
Manuel Herz (manuel.herz@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Our time is witnessing unprecedented levels of migration and population displacement. This seminar will survey and investigate spaces of refuge and forced migration, contextualizing them within the corresponding discourses of humanitarianism and political philosophy. Specific case studies, taken from throughout the 20th and 21st century, will allow an explicitly spatial, urbanistic and architectural view onto, and critique of, debates such as the “Responsibility to Protect”, development theory, notions of modernism and the refugee regime of UNHCR.
Learning objectives Develop an understanding of contemporary and historical processes of migration, refuge, and encampment, with particular attention to their spatial manifestations.
