Content Week 1: Embryogenesis and sexual differentation I & II
Week 2: Gonadal function: testes, ovaries, hormonal circuits; Toxic effects on gonads: protective measures (blood testis barrier, biotransformation, DNArepair) examples of toxicity
Week 3: Testing male reproductive function: animals and humans; Testing female reproductive function: animals and humans
Week 4: Placenta: transport of drugs, biotransformation, models; Prenatal toxicity and teratogenicity: mechanisms and examples I
Week 5: Prenatal toxicity and teratogenicity: mechanisms and examples II; Peri- and postnatal toxicities, lactation
Week 6: Regulatory requirements; In vitro systems and animal models
Week 7: Exam




Learning objectives to understand the basic endocrine pathways in the regulation of reproduction in the female and in the male
to understand the endocrine pathways in pregnancy
to be able to outline embryogenesis and sexual differentiation
to understand potential toxic effects of a number of compounds in reproductive toxicology and its mechanisms of action in the gonads, in the embryo & the placenta and during lactation
to be able to describe the evaluation systems in use in reproductive toxicology
