| Content | On associe souvent le 19e siècle à des entreprises narratives de très grande taille, tels que La Comédie humaine de Balzac, Les Rougon-Macquart de Zola ou certains romans-fleuves. Mais le 19e siècle est aussi celui du récit minuscule, épuré, un siècle durant lequel les écrivains explorent les ressources de la condensation, de l'allusion et du presque rien. On songe bien sûr aux nouvelles où se concentrent une vie, un événement passager ou un art de parler sans sujet, mais il faut y ajouter les chroniques, les "brèves" de journal, certains poèmes en prose, des notes comme les "choses vues" de Victor Hugo, voire les "nouvelles en trois lignes" de Fénéon et les fables en un seul quatrain de Mollevault, qui essayèrent, bien avant Tweeter, d'enfermer toute une histoire en quelques mots. Qu'est ce que ces miniatures, croquis et esquisses peuvent nous apprendre du 19e siècle et de son goût (déjà !) pour la vitesse ? En quoi de telles formes renouvellent-elles la narration ? Quels étaient leur public, leur fonction et leur ambition ? |

| Bibliography | Il peut être utile, avant de commencer le cours, de lire ou relire un manuel d'initiation à la narratologie comme La Poétique du roman, de Vincent Jouve (Armand Colin). Le cours se fondera sur de petites sélections de textes, à lire d'une séance à l'autre. |
