46891-01 - Seminar: Online narratives in English 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2017
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Narratives are all pervasive in human interaction and fulfill both a cognitive and a social need in communication. Telling a story can have many different functions and be realized in many different ways and with different levels of skill. After having established the classic terminology in describing narratives in face-to-face interaction (as developed by Labov for English data), this course works with recent theoretical insights as reported in literature on narratives in computer-mediated contexts (vlogs, twitter, status updates, online diaries, advice forums, etc). We will explore small stories and tiny stories and compare this to more elaborated acts of narrating in computer-mediated contexts.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students have gained knowledge on the interface between the study of narratives and computer-mediated communication with the help of literature. By engaging in empirical work, students can develop research questions of their own and analyze different practices within their context.
Bibliography A selection of texts will be made available in OLAT.
