46896-01 - Research seminar: Genre Breakers: Claudia Rankine and Vahni Capildeo 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2017
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Andrew Shields (andrew.shields@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course, we will study two books each by contemporary poets Claudia Rankine and Vahni Capildeo. These books, especially Rankine's "Citizen: An American Lyric", are some of the most extraordinary Anglophone writing of the 21st century. Each of them blurs the distinctions between genres (poetry, essay, short stories) as a means of exploring race, gender, and culture in the contemporary world. This promises to be an especially exciting course.
