50345-01 - Proseminar: Economy in Late Antiquity 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2018
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Irene Soto Marin (irene.sotomarin@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course studies and analyzes various aspects that define the Late Antique Economy in the Mediterranean. Late Antiquity was often defined in past scholarship as an era of transition between the "classical" Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. Yet scholarship over the last three decades has shown that it was an important period of advancement in technology and the development of economic systems. The class will cover the period between the Economic Reforms of Diocletian in the late third century CE, through the fall of the Roman West in the late fifth century, and up to the seventh century CE, when much of the Byzantine East was taken during the Arab conquests. We will analyze land tenure practices, economic institutions, taxation, markets, currency reforms, and technological developments in key regions of the Empire to understand the changes and developments during this period that laid the foundation for medieval and modern economic systems.
