50577-01 - Lecture: Displaying Knowledge in language and discourse    2 CP

Semester spring semester 2018
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lorenza Mondada (lorenza.mondada@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This lecture explores the relations between knowledge and language and discourse, in linguistics but also within an interdisciplinary perspective (e.g. philosophy, sociology of science, anthropology and psycho-sociology). How is knowledge expressed by language? How does language and discourse reveal that a sentence is already known or is new for the recipient, or that what is being said is known for sure or uncertain for the speaker? First, the course will give a general introduction discussing issues of knowledge in relation to scientific and ethno-scientific knowledge, propositional and praxeological knowledge, common sense and shared knowledge, and their linguistic manifestations. Second, the course will focus on linguistic markers of knowledge, based on typology (how is evidentiality expressed in different languages) and pragmatics (how new vs. known referents are coded in e.g. noun phrases vs. anaphoric pronouns). Third, we will discuss expressions such as “I know”, “you know” or “I don’t know” and what they do in discourse and interaction. Finally, we will focus on how knowledge issues transpire and are negotiated in social interaction: we will consider how in ordinary conversations two speakers might compete for displaying who knows best, how in institutional talk actions are built in a way that manifests who knows and who does not know. Examples will be discussed from professional meetings, classroom and other learning environments, as well as service encounters, in order to observe how knowledge is asymmetrically distributed and how this can be challenged by participants.
