50524-01 - Seminar: Relational work, politeness and identity construction in English 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2018
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The concepts of relational work, (im)politeness and identity construction are key concerns in research within the field of Interpersonal Pragmatics. Finding out what role the interpersonal aspect of communication plays in interaction by looking at naturally-occurring English data will be the aim of this seminar. We will work with well-established politeness theories (e.g., Lakoff 1973; Brown and Levinson 1978/1987; Leech 1983) as well as more recent work on the interface of (im)politeness with identity construction research.
Learning objectives At the end of this course, students should be able to discuss the development of (im)politeness research and the study of identity construction within Interpersonal Pragmatics of English; students will have gained experience in developing a small research project and applying the key concepts to naturally-occurring English data.
Bibliography A selection of texts will be made available in ADAM.
