Content Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000) was one of the leading American poets from the publication of her debut collection "A Street in Bronzeville" in 1945 until her death in 2000. In 1950, she became the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize, when she was awarded the Poetry prize for her second book, "Annie Allen". In the course, we will use a selected edition to read and discuss poetry from throughout her career.
Learning objectives In-depth study of Gwendolyn Brooks's poetry and its reception.
Bibliography This will be our primary text for the course:

The book will be available at the Labyrinth bookstore, Nadelberg 17, Basel.

Selected secondary literature on Brooks's poetry will be provided by the instructor.
