10702-01 - Main lecture: Anorganische Chemie I: Chemie der Hauptgruppenelemente und Gruppentheorie 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2018
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Catherine Housecroft (catherine.housecroft@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Thomas R. Ward (thomas.ward@unibas.ch)
Content Chemistry of main group elements (groups 1,2,13,14,15,16,17,18).
Introduction to symmetry, point groups and group theory and its applications in chemistry.
Learning objectives An understanding of the trends in chemical reactivity of the main group elements; use of thermodynamics in inorganic chemistry; a knowledge of the descriptive chemistry of the main group elements; trends in oxidation states across the periodic table and down groups; an appreciation of molecular symmetry and an ability to work out the point group of simple molecules. An introduction to group theory and applications to inorganic complexes with high symmetry.
