Content | The objective of this lecture is to introduce the basic concepts of image formation and explain the fundamental methods commonly used in Computer Vision such as in Medical Image Analysis Applications. The necessary signal processing background, to fully understand the presented methods, will be taught. In the introductory and motivational part of this course an overview of emerging computer vision applications in the medical field is given. Then the concepts related to digital images, their discretisation, quantification as well as the notation used throughout this lecture is introduced. The next part reviews the signal processing background necessary to understand the underlying mathematics behind many Computer Vision algorithms. The subsequent parts are then devoted to image enhancement and restoration techniques with the objective to pre-process the images such that they closely resemble the image captured under ideal conditions. We will also look at methods for basic feature extraction and how to group them into structures such as lines and circles. Finally, an overview of the existing image segmentation techniques is given. The understanding of the presented methods is deepened in the accompanying exercises. |
