| Content | Der Mythos des Prometheus steht kulturhistorisch für die Auseinandersetzung mit den Grenzen des Wissens, die dem Menschen gesetzt sind. Von den Göttern bestraft, weil er ihnen das Feuer stahl, um es den Menschen zu bringen, verkörpert Prometheus die Rebellion gegen Autoritäten und den menschlichen Wissens- und Entdeckerdrang. Gleichzeitig betont jedoch sein Schicksal auch die Gefahren, die mit der Transgression und der Usurpation göttlicher Macht einhergehen. Konkreter Anlass für diese interdisziplinäre Vorlesung im Jahr 2018 ist das 200jährige Jubiläum der Publikation von Mary Shelleys Roman "Frankenstein", der den programmatischen Untertitel 'der moderne Prometheus' trägt. Die Vorlesung spannt den Bogen vom antiken Mythos über Darstellungen des Prometheus-Stoffes in der bildenden Kunst, dem Frankenstein-Stoff sowie philosophischen und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Auseinandersetzungen bis zu aktuellen (post)humanistischen Debatten über Digitalisierung, den Begriff des Anthropozäns und die Schöpfungen des Silicon Valley. Neben wissenschaftlichen Vorträgen auf deutsch und englisch steht auch eine performance-lecture der französischen Künstlerin ORLAN und eine Lesung des Schweizer Autors Jonas Lüscher auf dem Programm. Die Vorlesungsreihe richtet sich ausdrücklich auch an die interessierte Öffentlichkeit. In cultural history, the myth of Prometheus negotiates the limitations that human beings are subject to. Punished by the gods for stealing fire and giving it to humans, Prometheus embodies both the rebellion against authority and the human thirst for knowledge and discovery, drawing attention at the same time to the dangers inherent in such transgressions. This interdisciplinary lecture celebrates the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus", beginning with a discussion of the Prometheus myth in classical antiquity and its uses in visual art, philosophy and the history of science. In the latter part of term, we will take our cue from "Frankenstein" to address (post)humanist debates about digitalization, the Anthropocene and the implications of advances in technology and the sciences. Highlights in the programme, beyond academic lectures in German and English, include a performance lecture by the French artist ORLAN, and Swiss author Jonas Lüscher will read from his novel "Kraft". This lecture is not only for students and colleagues; a cordial invitation goes out to members of the general public with an interest in the subject. |
| Learning objectives | Studierende erhalten einen Überblick über die Kulturgeschichte des Prometheus-Mythos von der klassischen Antike bis zur Gegenwart sowie Anregungen zum Nachdenken über die Implikationen des technischen Fortschritts im frühen 21. Jahrhundert. Students will get an interdisciplinary overview of the myth of Prometheus and its cultural permutations from classical antiquity to the present day and will be invited to think about the shape and the implications of technological progress in contemporary society. |
