Content Sustainability science is expected to study options for future societal development pathways. It strives, accordingly, not only to understand the complex interactions between ecological, economic and societal factors but also to study possible future outcomes and developments given today's options for action.
The seminar will introduce the method of qualitative scenario building for studying options for future developments. The method allows for integrating different disciplinary knowledge basis. The seminar’s study case will be „pathways to realize a climate friendly Swiss energy system until 2050“. The course is not only thought to introduce students to the method of qualitative scenario building but it also directed to support an ongoing process within SCCER-CREST to study possible pathways for the Swiss energy future. However, we will not primarily look at supply and demand of energy only, but strive to embed options for the future Swiss energy system in more encompassing societal trends such as digitalization, work place development, social structures etc.
Learning objectives Students
- are able to accomplish a qualitative scenario analysis (based on an IT-tool);
- will develop options for pathways to realize a climate friendly Swiss energy system 2050.

For students with focus area in social sciences the seminar is optional for the "Core Competences in Social Scienes" module.
All students may transfer the credit points to the FASR module (learning agreement).

This seminar is offered by MSD. Prof. Dr. Paul Burger is a member of the teaching committee MSD and head of the Sustainability Research Group, Dep. of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

 

Admission requirements Limited number of participants (25), MSD-Students and those of the IJDSD have priority. Others are only accepted if they study a master degree within the "Phil.-Hist."-Faculty. Special course inscription required for ALL (for details see "Anmeldung").
Entry requirements: preliminary knowledge on the energy system.

MSD 2017
Students who have chosen the focus area in natural sciences or in economics must have completed the 'Complementary Knowledge in Social Sciences' module.
