56646-01 - Master's project: Caffeine Effects on Neural Activities and Neurocognition 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Dominique de Quervain (dominique.dequervain@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Co-Lecturer: Yu-Shiuan Lin

Caffeine is a widely used psychostimulant in the daily life of the modern society. It is known to affect sleep homeostasis and consequently shows a positive effect on the vigilance. However, it is lack of a systematic understanding on how caffeine influences human brain functions along with the cognitions and behaviors. Numerous animal studies have demonstrated that caffeine antagonism disrupts the modulation of adenosine on the neurotransmissions, yet human studies about caffeine effects on neurotransmitters and systemic neural functions by far still bear a high heterogeneity in methods and designs.
Learning objectives This project aims to elucidate the systemic neural and neurocognitive effects of caffeine administration by comparing the comprehensive evidence derived from EEG, fMRI, and PET in healthy or clinical participants after acute or long-term caffeine consumption. To understand the application and limitations of neuroimaging in a classical study design of sleep research, an engagement in a fMRI measurement and analyses in a sleep project with full supervision will be possible.
