| Content | In this class we will explore the social fabric of ancient cities: their inhabitants, institutions, and centers of social, economic, and religious importance in order to experience as much as possible life in the Roman period. Readings will be geared towards well-known ancient authors such Pliny the Younger and Cicero but we will also spend substantial time reading papyri, in order to understand both the daily life of the elites and of the rest of the population. While we will study the layouts of particular ancient cities such as Rome, Alexandria, and Pompeii, we will focus more specifically on exploring the lives of their inhabitants. |
