57145-01 - Seminar: English in the Asian expanding circle: Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and beyond 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Jakob Leimgruber (jakob.leimgruber@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Asian Englishes is a well-established area of World Englishes: Singapore English, Indian English and others are well-studied and often dealt with in the ‘outer-circle’ of Englishes spoken in former colonial settings. This seminar goes beyond and explores hitherto less studied forms of English found in the ‘expanding circle’ of East Asia. We will deal with the phenomenon of English as a resource as it is used in places like Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, etc. On top of a solid grounding within the field of World Englishes, sociolinguistic approaches will be combined with structural analyses by means of corpora (where available) and other sources of data.
Learning objectives Students will acquire the tools and methods to investigate varieties of English in non-native contexts. They will discover East Asia as a culturally and linguistically diverse area. Furthermore, ways to identify and analyse structural differences in the Englishes found in East Asia will be learnt.
Bibliography Readings will be made available on ADAM.
