Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content As its title suggests, this course addresses "Play for Today", a British television drama series, produced by the broadcast on BBC1 from 1970 to 1984. There are more than three hundred programmes, featuring original television plays, and adaptations of stage plays and novels. The series is defining in British TV as an anthology that includes generation defining drama, and was an outlet for challenging and experimental work. The plays we will deal with are to include: "Nuts in May"; "Abigail's Party"; "Bar Mitzvah Boy"; "The Black Stuff", and more (depending on availability). Often talking to a wider audience, in everyday settings and yet dealing with the human condition, "Play for Today" is a great resource for considering a particular period of British culture and social formation. We will watch, discuss, and analyse.
Learning objectives Students will learn about a key decade in British TV drama, and become familiar with key players, many still relevant today. As well as working with the content of the plays, students will rehearse giving presentations and leading class discussions, and taking minutes. A written assignment internal to the course will be set.
Bibliography A reading list will be announced.
