64123-01 - Seminar: English in contact: Pidgins and creoles 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2022
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Jakob Leimgruber (jakob.leimgruber@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar considers the English language in contact situations that have resulted in the emergence of new codes, known as pidgins and creoles. The colonial period and its reliance on the slave trade are particularly relevant to this topic. We will see how contact between speakers of different languages has resulted in new codes that are lexically, grammatically, and phonologically distinct from their 'parent' languages. The study of pidgins and creoles has also led to major advances in linguistic theory, which student focus groups will focus on closely.
Learning objectives Students will develop an understanding of the global nature of the English language and of the processes behind the formation of contact languages. They will be taught to engage critically with the literature and the theoretical directions influenced by the study of pidgins and creoles.
Bibliography A detailed reading list, as well as selected readings, will be made available on ADAM.
