64034-01 - Seminar: English in the Workplace 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2022
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Carolin Debray (carolin.debray@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar we will explore English in the workplace from both theoretical and practical perspectives. We will investigate the spread and use of English in global workplaces, and familiarise ourselves with research on “BELF” (Business English as a Lingua Franca). We will question how English impacts professional practices in workplaces, including its impact on professional identity construction, team and leadership communication and workplace (in)equalities. Our aim with this will be twofold: on the one hand we will develop good theoretical understandings of professional communication and BELF, which we will then use to think practically about workplace communication and think about how common communicative problems could be addressed from a (linguistic) and evidence-based perspective.
Learning objectives - Familiarise yourself with concepts around BELF and Professional Communication
- Develop critical perspectives on language use in workplaces
- Consider how theoretical research insights could be applied to improve workplace communication
Bibliography We will mainly read original research articles in this course. These will be made available to you via ADAM at the start of the semester.
