Semester | spring semester 2022 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Peter Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | The course is designed to get you thinking about image, about text, about how to write about image based on a number of different writers and to develop an approach to writing in the academic discourse. Thus, there will be some input which stimulates your interest and so gives themes, topics, theses to write on. The way you develop writing relating to your own and integrating others' ideas is crucial. These aspects are to do with keeping your style under control and so bringing your ideas to the fore — neither at the expense of language skills nor breaking the conventions of academic writing: so the course animates you to stick to writing within the genres of academic discourse. Finally, write to think, write to enjoy, write to express, write to leave a mark. In this term, writers who will serve as models and input include Geoffrey Batchen, David Campany, Annette Kuhn, Hito Steyerl, and Kathleen Stewart. Places are limited to 24 students. Please register via email to p.burleigh@unibas.ch by 1.2.2022. |
Learning objectives | The course is designed to allow you to explore ways to write about image, encouraging the following specific aspects: making a statement of your own position; drawing out a relation between your own ideas and a scholarly environment; developing your position in relation to the scholarly discourse. In addition, you will learn about a number of canonical images and theoretical approaches to reading such images. |
Bibliography | A list of readings will be provided before the start of term. |
