Semester fall semester 2022
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Alexis Den Doncker (alexis.dendoncker@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Visit to the Egyptian antiquities collections of Benelux museums

Working sessions: Tuesday 11.10.22 and 01.11.22: 10.15-11.45, Kollegienhaus Seminarraum 103.
Excursion from Wednesday 16.11.22 to Sunday 20.11.22

Language: English and German.

This first term seminar will consist in an excursion to The Netherlands and Belgium to visit the collections of Egyptian antiquities of the Leiden Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, the Brussels Royal Museums of Art and History, and the Musée Royal de Mariemont, including temporary exhibitions.
The excursion will take place from Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 November 2022 (travel by train; possibility to return earlier on Saturday 19 evening).

The aim of the seminar is to introduce the students to object-based studies. Through a study of a selected (group of) artefact(s) from the collections, which they will present during the visit, the students will insist on possible methodological / epistemological issues related to the relationship of the scientist with the object. Their analyse will take into account the new conditions of perception as compared with the ancient ones—especially concerning objects usually considered as art pieces—and how the absence of the original context inevitably impacts on the object’s agency and the way we engage with it. In this regard, the students will benefit from the visit time to confront their analyse to the object in praesentia. The evaluation will be based on the presentation in the museums, the written paper and the active participation of the students during the visits.

Two working sessions will be organised in class to prepare the visits (planned on Tuesday 11/10/2022 and Tuesday 01/11/2022 from 10.15-11.45, Kollegienhaus Seminarraum 103.
