21765-01 - Lecture: Theory Survey II/II: Media Theory 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Philipp Schweighauser (ph.schweighauser@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This lecture course introduces you to a number of crucial issues and concepts in media theory. Topics covered range from Claude E. Shannon's seminal contributions to information theory, to Marshall McLuhan's (in)famous claim that "the medium is the message," to Friedrich Kittler's attempt to exorcise Geist from Geisteswissenschaft—and beyond. Each session or group of sessions will provide an introduction to a particular school of media theory.

Together, we will explore ways in which often complex theoretical reflections on the nature and function of modern media can be made useful for analyses of specific media texts (e.g. advertising, TV news coverage, pop songs). This is an interactive lecture course in which you are expected to participate actively in pair work and plenary discussions. For that reason, I recommend reading the texts assigned as preparatory reading for each session--all of which are available on ADAM.
Learning objectives You are introduced to a number of crucial issues and concepts in media theory and take first steps in using theoretical concepts to analyze specific media texts.
Bibliography All texts are available on ADAM. On ADAM, you will also find the handouts for each session, which you need to print out and bring along to the lectures, INCLUDING THE FIRST.
Comments Note that this course does not presuppose attendance of "Theory Survey I/II: Literary and Cultural Theory" (23062).
