Semester | fall semester 2023 |
Course frequency | Every fall sem. |
Lecturers | Julius Malin (julius.malin@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Scarcity…choice…time…money…markets. What is the relationship of these basic economic concepts to religion? How can they help us to understand the behavior of religious institutions and individuals? During this seminar, we will discuss basic economy theory and its application to religion at the scale of individuals, congregations, and countries. We will evaluate the success of religious congregations according to market theory, and consider concepts such as homo economicus, religious capital and the Protestant Work Ethic. Critical perspectives on these models will also be debated in order to appraise their strengths and weaknesses. |
Learning objectives | By the end of the course, students will be able to explain basic concepts in economics and analyze how these concepts have been applied to religious phenomena both at the macro and micro-scale. Furthermore, they will be able to critically appraise the advantages and challenges of applying economic theories to religion. |
