69151-01 - Seminar: Greek Literature on Papyri: Reading a Selection of Texts in their Original Form and Defining their Context 3 CP

Content Among many subject, papyri found in Egypt provide an unrivaled source of knowledge on ancient Greek Literature. If the benefice of finding previously lost texts or variants is obvious, this course will also explore the interest of looking at papyri to catch a glimpse on how literature was copied, disseminate and used in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The course will use digital resources and include visit(s) to look at original papyri.
Learning objectives Improve language skills in Ancient Greek by translating a variety of texts.
Get an introduction to the transcription and edition of ancient literature on papyri.
Learn more on the transmission of Greek literature from Antiquity to nowadays.
Get an inside on Ancient Culture in its materiality and practical aspects, in particular in Greco-Roman Egypt.
Learn to use relevant online resources.

Admission requirements This course requires prior knowledge of Ancient Greek (Graecum or equivalent). Motivated "false beginners" should get in contact with the professor.
