69412-01 - Research seminar: Task-based Language Development: Syntactic and Lexical Complexity in (English) Second Language Acquisition 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Zeynep Köylü (zeynep.koylu@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This MA research seminar is a survey of task-based approaches to second language (L2) development. We will exclusively look into how a variety of tasks will influence different dimensions of oral and written L2 performance, such as syntactic and lexical complexity, accuracy, and fluency. We will also discuss the nexus between different task conditions and L2 development. You will have the chance to be engaged with several hands-on activities/tasks to better understand task-based research designs and analyses. Overall, this research seminar aims to equip students with the tools to understand how task design, implementation, and involvement would differentiate L2 acquisition, performance, and development.
Learning objectives • You will know and discuss the fundamental concepts pertained to task-based L2 acquisition.
• You will be able to identify the role task design, implementation, and involvement in L2 development.
• You will be familiar with the relevant research strand in SLA.
• You will be able to synthesize theory and task-based research in a written assignment.
• You will be able to analyze data and how they relate to L2 development and task-based approaches.
