69402-01 - Course: 1970s Britain 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course is about the state of Britain in the 1970s: a decade of political and economic upheaval also marked by radical changes in culture and ways of life. Part of the course will consider theoretical tools with which we can analyse culture: Raymond Williams' developmental model of cultural change; the production of culture and its "architecture" following Henri Lefebvre and Michel De Certeau; the divisibility of nature/culture/human/machine/virtual in the work of Donna Haraway. The political and critical aspect of culture will always be present in the major part of the course, which will examine, discuss and analyse specifics of British culture and politics from the 1970s across a wide range of artefacts and behaviours, including: music, fashion, sport, feminism, radical movements, architecture, and more.
Learning objectives Students will learn about a key decade in British culture, and become familiar with key aspects of British culture that have helped shape Britain today. As well as working with the culture and politics of the period, students will rehearse giving presentations and leading class discussions, and taking minutes. A written assignment internal to the course will be set.
Bibliography A reading list will be announced at the beginning of the course
