Content | This BA/MA research seminar is a survey of learner corpus research (LCR) and how it informs second language acquisition (SLA). From learner corpus design to data collection and actual corpus compilation, we will look into both theoretical and practical aspects of LCR, while paying particular attention to different methods of analysis in both longitudinal and cross-sectional studies analyzing data from learners of English as an L2. We will also discuss the role of different modes (e.g., oral and written) and task conditions to collect corpus data and L2 development, along with optimal conditions to compile a learner corpus. You will have the chance to be engaged with several hands-on activities/tasks to better understand LCR designs and analyses and immerse in a variety of English learner corpora available. Overall, this research seminar aims to equip students with the tools to understand how data collection, corpus design, and SLA theories would differentiate the way learner corpora are compiled and employed in SLA research. |
Learning objectives | • You will know and discuss the fundamental concepts pertained to LCR. • You will be able to identify types of data, metadata, data collection and corpus compilation tools. • You will be familiar with the relevant research strand in SLA. • You will be able to synthesize theory and LCR in a written assignment. • You will be able to analyze data and how they relate to L2 development and LCR approaches. • You will be able to compile a (very) small learner corpus of your own using a corpus compilation tool of your choice. |
