Content | This course offers an introduction to the field of papyrology, the study of ancient writing on papyrus and other materials in the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods of Egyptian history (ca. 300 BCE - 800 CE). Papyri provide the most-detailed look at life in the ancient world, allowing us to read private letters, petitions, contracts, and more. Our focus will be on Greek documentary papyri, but papyri in Latin, Egyptian (Demotic and Coptic), Arabic, and other languages will also be mentioned. Students will learn not only how to understand papyrus texts, but also how these sources are used in historical and philological research. We plan to organise a visit to the Strasbourg papyrus collection. |
Learning objectives | Improve your knowledge on Greco-Roman Egypt by reading a variety of translated texts preserved on papyri. Get an introduction to how transcription and edition of ancient papyri are produced. Be able to analyse a papyrological source based on the characteristics of the text (layout, content, formulas) and the material (papyrus, ostracon, etc.) Get an inside on ancient historical sources in their materiality and practical aspects, in particular from Greco-Roman Egypt. Learn to use relevant online resources. |
