Content | This course equips PhD students in urban studies with a road map of the doctoral research journey, and offers a space to exchange experiences and discuss shared challenges across this trajectory. Through a combination of seminar discussions, individual assignments, writing sessions, and workshopping of pre-circulated writings, students will develop a greater awareness of their dissertation research and writing process, their disciplinary positioning and transdisciplinary engagements, and the theoretical, methodological, epistemological, ethical and political dimensions of their ongoing work more generally. The workshop also offers hand-on skill-building in research design, peer review, data analysis, and interpretation, and academic writing. Student Work: To earn a “pass” grade for this course, in case you take it for credit, you need to attend all sessions and submit all 4 assignments as listed below. Students who are not taking this course for credit are expected (at minimum) to do the assignments relevant to the stage of the dissertation they are in. Thursday 12 Sept: The Doctoral Research Journey This day-long sequence of sessions is organized to provide an overview of the doctoral journey, and to give you an opportunity to discuss shared challenges as well as learn about concrete tools at each stage. Friday 13 Sept: Writing Workshop and Research Presentations |
