| Content | This seminar seeks to trace new topics that developed after the country's transition to democratic government. Recent works of prose fiction by South African writers include Ivan Vladislavic, "The Restless Supermarket", Zakes Mda, "The Heart of Redness", Lewis Nkosi, "Mandela's Ego", J.M. Coetzee, "The Lives of Animals". Drawing on postmodern strategies to destabilise meaning, these texts articulate a carefully circumscribed value for human beings as well as animals within current social and cultural orders. Thus, South Africa's emerging environmental culture may also provide new ways of reading works of fiction. |
