18889-01 - Seminar: English-Related Pidgins and Creoles 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2007
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar we will explore some of the central issues in pidgin and creole studies (or 'creolistics'), an exciting and fast developing realm of (socio-)linguistic inquiry. Creolists recognise that pidgins and creoles are legitimate, rule-governed varieties of language that differ in systematic ways from recognised standard languages, rather than – as the popular stereotype would have it – corrupted, incorrect or illegitimate forms of careless speech. In this course we will focus on English-related pidgins and creoles, i.e. the English-lexifier contact languages that arose in the context of colonial expansion, the slave trade and the plantation system, and are still widely spoken in many parts of the world (e.g. Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific region, etc.). We shall examine their linguistic structures (grammatical, lexical, phonological), familiarise ourselves with theories of their origins and development, and explore some of the major problems that speakers of these linguistic varieties face in their everyday lives, i.e. problems related to education, the legal system, language rights, language planning, etc.
Learning objectives Students will familiarise themselves with key issues in creolistics, they will deepen their knowledge of language contact phenomena and will refine their understanding of the sociocultural contexts in which new languages arise.
Bibliography A reader will be made available. A bibliography will be handed out in class.
