18894-01 - Seminar: Sociolinguistic Perspectives on Literacy 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2007
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar will be concerned with literacy, i.e. the social practices of reading and writing (with a special emphasis on the latter). We will explore literacy from a cross-cultural and critical perspective, addressing its linguistic, sociocultural, educational and political dimensions. Rather than seeing literacy as a 'neutral' technical skill, we will seek to understand how literacy practices are affected by social and material conditions, implicated in power relations and embedded in specific cultural meanings. Topics to be addressed will include: literacy as embedded activity (e.g. within communities of practice); literacy, illiteracy, and linguistic gatekeeping; literacy and schooling; literacy and social change; literacy campaigns, literacy programmes, colonial legacies and indigenous transformations; multiliteracies and the new media; the cultural politics of writing.
Learning objectives By engaging with theoretical perspectives developed in literacy studies and by critically examining a range of case studies from various contexts, we will aim to deepen our understanding of the intricate relationships between literacy practices, power and identity formation.
Bibliography A reader will be made available. A bibliography will be handed out in class.
