18891-01 - Seminar: Gertrude Stein and Postmodernism 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2007
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Franziska Gygax (franziska.gygax@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Gertrude Stein as one of the most prominent literary figures of modernism has also been called the mother of postmodernism because her writings on the one hand demonstrate postmodern aesthetic practices, and on the other hand have been influential for a number of postmodern writers of the late 20th and 21st centuries. Relying on postmodern critical categories we can approach Stein’s highly experimental and decentering poetic language in a more encompassing way and establish links between her and contemporary writers such as Lyn Hejinian and Susan Howe, two representatives of the so-called L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets. We will also discuss some of Stein’s plays and their stagings by Robert Wilson.
Learning objectives The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to Stein’s works (plays, prose texts, poetry) and to become acquainted with some of the theoreticians of postmodernity.
Bibliography "Selected Writings of Gertrude Stein". Ed. Carl Van Vechten (Vintage). (On order at "Labyrinth" bookshop) A selection of primary and secondary texts will be available on the EVA server.
