Content | An extended journey into the staged lives of four female protagonists, their relations and dramatic functions in four comedies, will lead us from Heinrich Heines Shakespeares Mädchen und Frauen (the starting point of our discussion) to a more current assessment of womens engendered roles in their respective comic settings. "The Taming of the Shrew", "Much Ado About Nothing", "As You Like It", and "Twelfth Night" feature particularly resourceful heroines in their pursuit of happiness and subsequent marriage. Thus, the multifarious role playing of Kate, the Shrew, Beatrice, the Wit, Rosalind, the Educator, and Viola, the androgynous Go-Between will be the focus of our scholarly attention. |
