19140-01 - Lecture: A Survey of English Literature IV: fin de siècle until today 2 CP

Content This is the fourth and final part of the survey of English literature designed to give students an overview of English literary history and culture from the early modern period to the present day. We will begin with the 1890s this time and look at important texts, authors, movements and developments, including the dynamics which influence the canonization of English literature.
Learning objectives Students will become acquainted with major texts and events in English literature and learn to place them in a larger cultural context. They will explore how contents and literary style reflect the period(s) in question.
Bibliography A bibliography will be available. For preliminary reading you may consult the "Norton Anthology of English Literature", Vol. 2, ed. Stephen Greenblatt, 2005, the "Kulturgeschichte der englischen Literatur: Von der Renaissance bis zur Gegenwart", ed. Vera Nünning, 2005 and the "Oxford English Literary History", Vol. 10 by Chris Baldick, 2005.
