Content | The sitcom (situation comedy) as a genre dates back to the heydays of great radio comedy; in terms of content and technique, it owes a lot to the music hall tradition. Sitcoms are usually preoccupied with the tribulations of everyday life such as class antagonisms and relationship problems. Today, the sitcom is considered a major form of TV entertainment, but despite its popularity, it has only rarely been given the scholarly attention it deserves. In this course, we intend to introduce concepts and critical approaches to study and analyse the sitcom. We will trace the history of the British sitcom by looking at some representatives from each decade (1950-2000) by placing a specific emphasis on the notion of class and gender. |
Learning objectives | To familiarise students with the genre of the British sitcom; to improve the skills to study/analyse material that is specific to this particular genre; to make students aware of how gender identity is discursively articulated and negotiated in the British sitcom. |
Admission requirements | The students should have a specific interest in studying media texts. Furthermore, it is advisable to be at least partly familiar with some of the sitcoms we are dealing with, these include: - Hancocks Half Hour - The Likely Lads - Steptoe & Son - Only Fools and Horses - Men Behaving Badly - Manchild |
