19956-01 - Lecture: A Survey of English Literature I: Renaissance to Restoration (2 CP)

Content This is the first part of the survey of English literature designed to give students an overview of English literary history and culture from the early modern period to the present day. We will cover the period up to around 1700 and look at important texts, authors, movements and developments and place them in a historical and cultural context.
Learning objectives Students will become acquainted with major texts and events in English literature and learn to place them in a larger cultural context. They will acquire a general framework to serve as a basis for their in-depth studies.
Bibliography A bibliography as well as the lecture slides will be available on the EVA-server. For preliminary reading you may consult "The Norton Anthology of English Literature", Vol. I in a recent edition and "Renaissance Drama, an Anthology of Plays and Entertainments", ed. Arthur Kinney, Oxford: Blackwell 1999.
