19938-01 - Proseminar: The condition-of-England novel 3 CP

Content The condition-of-England novel is an important genre within English literature, and this course is designed to introduce students to this genre and explore its development from the beginnings in Victorian times to the late 20th century. We will read some key texts as literary negotiations of crucial political and cultural debates.
Learning objectives Students will refine their skills in reading and comparing prose fiction from various periods and explore the role of literature in cultural development. They will also learn about English social history and the debates around the process of modernization.

Admission requirements Successful attendance of the first semester of a Second-Year Course in literature.
Course application Places are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis: enrol by email to the teacher ina.habermann(at)unibas.ch. The first 22 students to enrol are guaranteed a place in the second-year course of their choice; others are put on a waiting list and may have to attend one of the other two courses on offer.
