19936-01 - Proseminar: Writers of the American South 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2008
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Franziska Gygax (franziska.gygax@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Representations of regional identity are at the core of many writers of the American South beside the exploration of the troubling history of the Old South. William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, and Eudora Welty are three representative writers whose texts challenge traditions, rituals, and myths of the South in very different ways. In this course we will discuss meanings of place/region with regard to race and gender. Furthermore, narratological issues will be addressed as well as concepts and definitions of narratives.
Learning objectives The aim of this course is to exercise and expand the range of skills acquired in the introductory courses, to enable students to write their first (shorter) seminar paper at the end of the semester.
Bibliography William Faulkner. "The Sound and the Fury" (Vintage: “The Corrected Text” 1990); Zora Neale Hurston. "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (HarperCollins). Ordered at “Labyrinth”. A selection of Eudora Welty’s short stories and critical texts will be available on the EVA server.
Comments Read "The Sound and the Fury" before the semester starts.
