19947-01 - Seminar: The Sociolinguistics of Narrative 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2008
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In recent years the importance of narrative as an interactional resource, as well as an indispensable tool for making sense of the world and ourselves, has increasingly come to be recognised. To a great extent we understand who we are, and who others are, through stories. Not only do individuals use narratives to create coherence in their biographical experience, they also use stories to express and enact a sense of community and attachment to place. In this seminar we will explore the structure, function and use of narrative from a sociolinguistic perspective. We will critically engage with some of the most important theoretical models of narrative that have been offered to date and will test these models against a range of narrative texts (e.g. conversational narratives, news stories, workplace narratives, stories from the oral tradition, etc.) from a variety of cultural contexts.
Learning objectives Our overall aim will be to work towards a fuller understanding of narrative as a genre and of narrative practice as a vital component in the creation and negotiation of our social and cultural worlds.
Bibliography A reader will be made available.
