Content This introduction to the study of „The Image of the White in Southern Africa“ will examine texts in English which portray the „white man“ in Africa as he explores, penetrates and starts dominating the African continent. How does he picture himself, how is he perceived by the indigenous population? From David Livingstone, to Henry Morton Stanley, from Kurtz to Marlow, from Jan van Riebeeck to Ryder Haggard, from Cecil Rhodes to André Brink or J. M. Coetzee (just to mention a few names), we will see a varied portrait of the white man emerge as he colonizes unknown territories.
