20889-01 - Seminar: Rewriting Henry JAMES in the 21st Century 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2008
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Between 2002-2005 five contemporary authors published novels in which the master Henry James (1843-1916) featured as a major figure in the new text or as part of the plot: Emma Tennant’s "Felony" (2002), Colm Tóibín’s "The Master" (2004), David Lodge’s "Author, Author" (2004), Alan Hollinghurst’s "The Line of Beauty" (2004), and Michiel Heyn’s "The Typewriter’s Tale" (2005) are indeed intriguing examples of intertextuality. We will examine these multifarious relations between the „original“ as well as the „rewritings“. As we get acquainted with the scripts and prescripts we will further discuss current concepts of authorship as to explain the sudden interest in James’s writing.
