20892-01 - Seminar: Urbanization in Southern Africa 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2008
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar examines the significance of the so-called ‚spatial turn’ in disciplines such as e.g. cultural and literary studies. The term applies well to the turn South Africa is currently undergoing: Inner cities, most notably Johannesburg, are deserted as well as repopulated with immigrants. This shift to urban areas is not new in South Africa (cf. the „Jim comes to Joburg“ novel) but of a current emergency that produces a range of new texts. Apartheid as a regime of segregation and repopulation still lingers large. Today post-apartheid development is constrained by confliction
Bibliography Athol Fugard, "Boesman and Lena"; Sindiwe Magona, "Mother to Mother"; Zoë Wicomb, "You Can’t Get Lost in Cape Town"; Phaswane Mphe, "Welcome to Our Hillbrow"; Ivan Vladislavic, "Portrait with Keys: the city of Johannesburg unlocked", "The Restless Supermarket"
