20967-01 - Practical course: Discourse Transcription: From Theory to Practice 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2008
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This Übung is dedicated to exploring – both theoretically and practically – the task of transcription, i.e. the representation of spoken interaction in written form, understood as a fundamental component of the study of discourse. As has long been recognised, transcribing verbal interaction is much more than just writing down what is being said. For one thing, how we choose to render the spoken data into written text will inevitably influence the subsequent tasks of analysis and interpretation. What is more, the task of transcribing involves not only managing the tension between accuracy and readability, but also an acute awareness of what we may call the politics of representation, i.e. an understanding of the ideological and power-political consequences of the various choices the transcriber makes in textually representing speech and speakers. The Uebung will be useful to students who want to engage in discourse-analytical work, but beyond that, should be of interest to anybody who wants to gain deeper insight into the nature of spoken discourse and the relationship between oral forms and their written representation.
Learning objectives To gain hands-on experience in transcribing spoken discourse, and to gain a deeper understanding of the process of transcription itself, based on an examination of a selection of approaches emerging from various discourse analytic traditions.
Bibliography A reader will be made available.
