| Content | In this course we will focus on language usage in social interaction, and will deal with the notion of 'discourse' and 'discourse analysis' in particular. We will touch on research areas as diverse as language usage in institutions, culture and language or politics and language. In addition, you will be introduced to the different methodologies employed. van Dijks (1997) "Discourse as Social Interaction" (Volume 2) will serve as our course book. As preparation for the first session, however, you are expected to have read the introductory chapter by Teun van Dijk (volume 1), entitled 'The study of discourse', which will be available in the virtual classroom OLAT. |
| Learning objectives | At the end of this course students should be able to outline the fields of research introduced; define and discuss the key concepts of the fields of research introduced; acquire research skills for independent project work; and be able to critically examine and evaluate linguistic texts. |
