Semester fall semester 2008
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Computer technology provides people with many different ways of interacting. In this course we will explore computer-mediated communication in its various manifestations, such as email, chats, blogs, fora, YouTube, etc. and discuss the impact of the medium on the use of the English language. We will ask questions related to style, interactional patterns, Netiquette, language innovations, emoticons, and the influence of the technical restrictions (e.g., asynchronic versus synchronic types of media) on linguistic choices. This seminar is workshop based. Students are requested to collect data and organize empirical sessions in which research questions and the use of methodology are discussed. Students should attend the accompanying lecture 20910-01 on “English on the web”.
Learning objectives Students should learn to critically transfer the theoretical knowledge on methodology and CMC to their own small research projects and present the results in written and oral form.
